As the title of this post suggests, it turns out that Protest The Hero (in my opinion, one of the best prog metal bands out there today) are now officially working on a new album!
This would normally be pretty standard (though awesome) news, but what’s special about the band’s 4th studio effort is that this time around, they’re taking to the power of the internet to cut out the record labels completely and release the album independently. How you say? Well, by turning to their loving fans for the financial backing! They’ve set up a page on the site IndieGoGo and, as they explain in a short video, are allowing their fans to provide them with the money they need to produce the album. This means that there are no record companies to interfere with the band’s creativity, and a vast percentage more money from album sales will go straight into the pockets of the artists themselves rather than being eaten up by the label.
Basically, I’m advocating the shit out of this idea. So many bands get tragically screwed over by record labels these days and end up only receiving a tiny percentage of profit from their own work. We’ve already seen similar projects take off in the video game world with Kickstarter and, with any luck, this could be a sign of good things to come in the future for Protest and other independent bands.
The campaign has already raised more than enough to money to reach its target, but you can still donate to these fine chaps here, if you like. If you’ve never listened to them before and the charming video isn’t enough to convince you, here’s a few fine examples of their work from each of their 3 albums; Kezia, Fortress and Scurrilous.
Blah. blah blah aren't you glad you heard my voice?
